How Does Early Ordering Work?

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 4:39 PM

So, I got a gift card for the holidays, to amazon.com, and I notice that Conspiracy is available for pre-order and is about four dollars cheaper than the list price. I am wondering if this means that the price will go up if I order it in March or later. Anybody know how that works?
Also, if I did preorder it, would that mean that it would get shipped to me on March 23, and would arrive, say March 27? So, if I bought it in person at Borders I could get it on March 23, but from amazon would take longer? I talked to the Borders person who said that when stuff is supposed to be released on a certain day, they have in the backroom before that and just put it out for sale on the release day....

So, if I want to read the book as early as possible, do I need to buy it from a local bookstore?

And is it generally cheaper to pre-order books?

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Took a full-time job and became the mother of a teenager. Attended the Continuing Education session at Ambassador Bible Center.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I can't remember whether I meant to do anything specific this year or not. I usually don't resolve much, but I usually have goals. I'm sure I'll make goals, but God being how He is and life being what it is, everything will probably go pear-shaped before I can accomplish them!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth or get pregnant?
Hmmm...several Live Journal friends, though now my head's getting all mushy and I'm having trouble remembering anyone besides [info]ladygoat and [info]butterbobbin.

4. Did anyone close to you get married?

Again, primarily LJ friends...looks in [info]wistfulmaid's direction...

5. Did anyone close to you die?

I don't think so...

6. Travel?

Oooh, twice to Georgia, once to Wisconsin Dells and environs, one road trip up to New York and back along the Lincoln Highway. I think that's it--surprisingly little, for us.
Lots more behind here! )

Pondering on the whole writing thing. . .

I've just been assimilated into the lovers of Megan Whalen Turner's world of Attolia. She created a completely new world, where men dressed as Romans and Greeks use guns and have pocket watches. Very creative. It's hard to tell what might be historically accurate from what patently isn't. I'd love to live in Attolia or Eddis.

On the other hand, I'm trying to read a book called Magyk by Angie Sage. Not going so well. I glanced ahead in the book and saw the word, "boggart". Those of you who read Harry Potter know that a boggart is a creature created by Rowling; it takes the shape of whatever it thinks the viewer fears most. Seeing the word "boggart" in the work of someone other than Rowling made me not want to read the book any more.

But it's not just the word "boggart". In this world Angie Sage created, all wizards and witches develop green eyes as they mature. The Heap family consists of 6 boys and one little girl (sound familiar?). Combined with the green eyes, I keep expecting Ms. Sage to describe the Heaps as all having red hair, too. Then the little girl received a pet rock and named it "Petroc Trelawney." That was about the last straw for this book. Honestly, how many more little homages to Rowling can we shove into one book before it can be called plagiarism? Why didn't an editor or proofreader stop and say, "You know, that sounds a little too much like Rowling. What if their eyes turn a brilliant blue, or an unnaturally deep brown? Instead of 'boggart', let's create a completely new word". Magyk was published in 2005. It isn't like Ms. Sage can try to say that she was unaware of Harry Potter or boggarts.

Writing is hard. Writing fantasy is, in some ways, harder. Writing completely original fantasy, wherein the world and situations resemble nothing seen in fiction before, is, obviously, beyond some published writers and their editors.

Summer Pictures

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 12:00 PM
I finally have time to sit and upload pictures, so you get to see one of the trips we made this summer. We ditched the kids at camp and then drove on the Lincoln Highway to New York. Or maybe we took the Lincoln Highway on the way back. Anyway, we drove some part of the trip on the Lincoln Highway, thus satisfying [info]reubeneater's Road Geekiness.

You can see the whole set by clicking through any photo...this is just a taste.

Exton Diner, Exton, PA

Finally: [info]krikketgirl and [info]greenhornet meet. He was fantastic, funny, and thoughtful (he brought a gift for my kids, y'all, and told me they were awesome). We had a wonderful lunch and wished we could have had more time to spend. All this to say, I don't know why I look like an idiot in the pic.

No standing? Oops.

Ooops.

Hokay, folks, I'm back.

I've finished KoA, finally, and good lord, it was amazing. It was a thousand kinds of amazing. It was the kind of amazing that made me want to read it again, and that made me disappointed with the next book I picked up simply because the lack of amazing blend of tone, style, and secrecy.* I am very excited! It was a good book! :D

I've been thinking of fanart, but what's frustrating is, I have such certain images of a few characters (Eugenides, Attolia, Eddis), and none at all of certain others (Costis, Teleus), that it makes it very difficult to art for these folks.

I compromised for my first fanart. Gen, minus face.

Also at Deviantart!

Bit of a rush job - this couldn't taken 20 minutes - and the anatomy's a little wonky - I kind of want to draw him a little thinner, next time, like I imagine. Also, next time he'll be clothed.** But the basic concept is there.

(Need to research clothes of the time period, and also the kinds of gymnastics you can do with one hand.)

So yeah! There you have it. Hopefully I'll be back periodically with some other characters - also, faces. Faces are nice.

*This is not to say Francis Mary Hendry's Quest for a Maid is not good (my childhood!), only that it is ... not KoA.

**I have an excuse for the lack of shirt. That is because he is someplace where shirts are not necessary. Like in his rooms. Or Attolia's. Not because of gratuitous muscle-drawing. Totally not.

December Poll Edit

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 12:43 PM
I've had to correct the poll for missing a few icons-if you've already voted please revote. Thanks! Please view all the icons in each category and then vote-don't just vote for an icon because you nominated it or its an icon that a friend made.

Voting for December 2009 is under the cut and will last until Tuesday, December 29th, Midnight EST.

Again when voting, please do not vote for an icon because you nominated it or because you like the maker or the maker is a friend. Take into consideration the category the icon is nominated in and vote accordingly. For example best coloring, vote for the icon with the best use of color.

Remember don't vote for yourself or get others to vote for you and if your icon is nominated you don't have to vote in that category. Good luck! We'll all grow up one day, Meg. We might as well know what we want. )
Here's a bit of British humor for Christmas!

OK, I must run! Lots of work to do before Christmas Eve -- Happy Holidays, everyone, and tell all your friends to listen to the podcast, because Megan Whalen Turner and her books are awesome!

Has anybody ever heard of lala.com?

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 1:33 PM
I was hunting for a song last night and discovered it on Lala.com. It looks a lot like Napster, but the songs are cheaper (only $.89 for most of them) and there's a queue you can put up to 25 songs into and listen to them online for free. It costs to download them.

Has anyone heard anything good, bad, or indifferent about lala.com?
